Abstract

This paper describes a new approach to specifying graph- ical layouts of arbitrary objects, which is based on a TEX- like notation. Our simplest scheme o ers speci cations similar to TEX's box-and-glue metaphor. Size and po- sition of boxes and glue can be speci ed by constraints. Advantages of this TEX-like formalism are its expressive- ness, user-predictable layouts, and efficient implementation schemes for the underlying layout algorithms. We extend and generalize this forms-oriented scheme for specifying advanced graphical user interfaces (e.g. CLOS class browser).

Abstract

This paper describes a new approach to visualizing program systems within the object-oriented paradigm. This approach is based on a TEX-like notation which has been extended and generalized for specifying graphical layout of arbitrary objects. The CLOS meta-level architecture is used to associate visualization and application objects. We propose several useful techniques such as indirect values, slot and method demons, and instance-speci c meta- objects. Our techniques require no modi cations to the systems which are selected for visualization. We demon- strate the feasibility of our approach using application do- mains such as CLOS debugging and constraint systems.
