The Institute of Information Systems (IFIS) is one of the Institutes of Computer Science at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of Lübeck and was established in 1993 as the first Computer Science Institute at the University of Lübeck. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Nele Rußwinkel took over as head of the institute in February 2024.

IFIS is concerned with the representation, storage, and retrieval of any kind of data for building information systems. Main research activities are centered around logical and probabilistical foundations of data modeling, efficient storage and retrieval of data, development of inference and query answering techniques for huge amounts of data as well as the automatic generation of data representations, e.g., from large networks such as the Web. Furthermore, IFIS research covers topics about Cloud Computing and Web data management.
